N1 – Sustainable by Tradition
WOOD CHIP PLANT
The plant generates 11,000 MWh per year, covering around 70% of our heating needs with biomass. This saves 1.1 million liters of heating oil annually and avoids approximately 2,900 tons of CO₂ per year.
ELECTROMOBILITY
Our vehicle fleet is gradually being converted to electric mobility. With our five new eActros 400 trucks, we deliver our beers entirely electrically to our customers.
ANAEROBIC WASTEWATER TREATMENT
By adding an anaerobic stage, our wastewater treatment plant achieves a saving of more than 100,000 liters of heating oil per year – an additional CO₂ reduction of 270 tons annually.
REGIONAL GREEN ELECTRICITY
Since 2016, we have been sourcing regional green electricity from hydroelectric power plants on the High Rhine. Using 100% regional green electricity reduces CO₂ emissions by about 2,800 tons per year.
PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM
On more than 9,000 m² of roof area, we generate our own electricity using the Black Forest sun. The system produces 1,500 MWh annually, covering about one-fifth of the brewery’s total electricity demand.
SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEM
With 1,000 m² of collector area, we generate process heat, for example for our bottle-washing machines. The annual output is 300 MWh, equivalent to avoiding 80 t of CO₂ per year.
RETURNABLE BOTTLE SORTING SYSTEM
The sorting system handles 3,500 crates per hour. Returnable bottles can be refilled up to 40 times and eventually return to the material cycle as recycled glass.
OUTLOOK – WIND FARM
To achieve our ambitious goal of climate positivity by 2030, we plan to purchase two turbines from a wind farm being built near the brewery.
Small Info Panels
RETURNABLE BOTTLES
Our beers are filled exclusively in returnable bottles that can be reused up to 40 times. During transport, cleaning, and multiple fillings, wear marks appear on the bottle’s friction rings, becoming more visible with each use. This phenomenon is called scuffing.
BOTTLE RECYCLING
Used glass bottles are not waste but a valuable raw material. Glass can be recycled almost indefinitely without losing quality. By melting and reusing it, we save energy and natural resources. Old bottles are transformed into new glass – a true cycle that protects our environment.
CROWN CAPS
Crown caps are also part of the recycling cycle. They are mainly made of metal, which can be recycled very effectively. Proper recycling of these materials ensures valuable resources remain in circulation and protects the environment.
PAPER LABELS
Our labels are attached with a special water-soluble adhesive. During washing, they completely detach from the bottles. The removed labels are collected separately and recycled with paper. This ensures that paper is reused and valuable resources are preserved.
